At the end of each year, Spotify releases its famous ‘Wrapped’ feature – a positive, judgment-free analysis of your listening habits over the past 12 months. But where’s the fun in that? That’s where alternatives like ‘How Bad Is Your Spotify‘ and Receiptify comes in – “A.I.-powered” bots that will mercilessly judge and roast you based on your most listened-to tunes.
How Bad Is Your Spotify?
Created by Matt Daniels of digital publication The Pudding, How Bad Is Your Spotify? went viral even before its official launch, racking up millions of views and overwhelming Spotify’s API with the sheer volume of users. As people gleefully shared screenshots of their harsh musical critiques, the project rapidly hit the #1 spot on Twitter’s trending topics.
So how does it work? Once you enter your Spotify login credentials, the bot analyzes the entire contents of your music library. It then returns various stats, including a percentage score indicating just how “basic” your taste in music really is. But the main event is the hilariously savage roast of your audio preferences.
One Spotify user was told their music taste was “please-read-my-manuscript-60-dollar-white-tshirt-local-talk-radio-bumper-sticker-bitch bad.” Ouch. The crisp, playground-levels of namecalling are clearly part of the bot’s charming appeal.
When I used the tool myself, I got told my Spotify was “depressive canadian trap house motherfucking starboy bad.” Yikes, that one really cut deep!
The viral phenomenon, also known as “Judge My Spotify,” first exploded in popularity back in 2020. Users flocked to share their results across social media, causing frequent crashes for creator Matt Daniels due to the overwhelming demand.
And there’s certainly a vast pool of listening data for the bot to dig into. According to a 2022 study, the average Spotify user listens to a staggering 41,330 minutes of music per year – equating to nearly a month’s worth of continuous audio streaming.
With millions of Spotify libraries ripe for ridicule, it’s no surprise ‘How Bad Is Your Spotify?’ has struck such a chord with music fans online. After all, who doesn’t enjoy an AI that can skillfully, and hysterically, roast your terrible music taste to oblivion?
Receiptify
“But How Bad Is Your Spotify?” isn’t the only one letting you roast your music taste. Receiptify, an ingenious web app has also captivated millions. It converts users’ Spotify playlists into visually-stunning ‘receipt’ illustrations, garnering over a million accesses in just the first few months.
